Yala Villa - A Private Safari Villa near Yala National Park, Kirinda

The villa's three spacious, air-conditioned ensuite bedrooms are arranged to sleep up to eleven guests in total, with king-size beds and additional sofa beds giving flexibility for families travelling with children or groups sharing. One of the bedrooms has a king bed with a sofa bed which can easily accommodate 3, whilst the other two bedrooms have a king bed and two sofa beds each and can easily accommodate 4 guests. Air conditioning throughout is no small thing in this part of the island: Yala sits in Sri Lanka's dry zone, where daytime temperatures regularly climb into the low thirties, and coming back to a properly cool room after four hours in an open jeep is a real luxury.

The bathrooms are finished with an antique touch that suits the character of the house, and the walls throughout are hung with wildlife photography. It's a layout that works particularly well for two or three families travelling together, since each room can absorb children without anyone being separated from their group.

Inside the main house, cooling polished-cement floors and soft sea-green accents set a calm, uncluttered tone, a deliberate contrast to the heat and dust of the landscape outside. The walls carry striking wildlife photography taken by the owner, images shot in this very park, which quietly sets the mood for what you've come here to see.

Two long verandahs run along the house and open directly onto the central garden and private swimming pool, and this is where most of the day ends up happening. It's the spot to cool off with a drink after a dusty morning game drive, to stretch out with a book through the hot middle hours, or to sit with a beer as the light drops and the birds start up. The pool is the villa's centre of gravity, especially for families, somewhere for children to burn off energy between drives while the adults do very little at all.

The living area looks out over the pool and is built around a generous 12-seater dining table, the natural gathering point for the group. After a morning in the park, this is where everyone lands: comparing photographs, arguing over whether that shape in the undergrowth really was a leopard, and planning the afternoon. The open-plan layout, designed by architect Channa Daswatte, keeps the indoors and the surrounding landscape connected throughout, so you're never quite separated from the jungle, which is rather the point of coming to Yala in the first place.

Yala is gloriously remote, and that's part of the appeal, but it also means restaurants aren't on the doorstep. The villa solves this the right way: a dedicated in-house chef and a full staff team look after all the cooking, from home-style Sri Lankan rice and curry to poolside lunches and evening barbecues under a sky full of stars. Safari days start early and finish dusty, so meals here work around you rather than the other way round, an early coffee before a 5.30am departure, a proper breakfast when you return, and dinner whenever the group is ready.

The cooking is what guests write about most. Sri Lankan dishes prepared from scratch, garden barbecues arranged on request, and a kitchen happy to work around children's tastes and dietary requirements. Being fully staffed also means the practical side of a remote stay simply disappears: housekeeping, provisioning and the day-to-day are all handled, and the team know the area well enough to tell you which temple is worth the detour and where to watch the sun go down.

Yala is Sri Lanka's most famous wildlife reserve and one of the best places on earth to see a leopard in the wild. The park's Block 1, reached through the Palatupana gate closest to Kirinda, holds the highest density of leopards anywhere in the world, roughly one animal per square kilometre, and because these leopards have grown used to vehicles, they're far less elusive here than in most parks. Alongside them you'll find a population of around 250 to 300 elephants, sloth bears, sambar and spotted deer, crocodiles, wild boar and an exceptional variety of birdlife across lagoons, scrub jungle and open savannah.

The park runs from 6.00am to 6.00pm, with morning and afternoon game drives the standard options and full-day safaris available for anyone serious about photography. The dry season, roughly February through to August, is generally considered the best time for sightings: water sources shrink, the foliage thins, and animals concentrate around the remaining waterholes.
