The Bedrooms
The five air-conditioned bedrooms are furnished with whitewashed antique four-poster beds, high wooden frames with mosquito nets, dressed in high-thread-count linen, each with its own bathroom finished in taupe marble with a monsoon shower. The master is an exceptionally spacious suite with a deeply cushioned built-in window seat framing the sea, and a sandstone-and-marble bathroom with a freestanding tub, twin washbasins and a monsoon shower.
The remaining rooms are a mix of twin and queen configurations, one of them connecting through to the villa's media room, a genuinely useful arrangement for families with teenagers. Most bedrooms draw natural light through curated mini courtyards or skylights, so even the interior rooms feel bright. Everything is on a single level, which makes the villa unusually easy for older guests or anyone travelling with small children
Living, Relaxing and the Media Room
The living spaces are built around calm island comfort, a traditional high-vaulted ceiling painted white above jute and natural-fibre rugs, keeping the main living area light and easy. Guests arrive past a tranquil pond at the entrance, which sets the tone before you've even reached the front door.
A garden pavilion, glazed along one entire wall with swivel windows, is furnished with cushioned stone seats around a large central coffee table, the spot that catches the sea breeze and ends up being where everyone gathers. There's a large, airy indoor dining hall generous enough to seat an entire family or group, a separate dining porch, and a wide outdoor seating area for lounging through the afternoon. A separate media room with a TV handles slower evenings and rainy hours, and there's parking for three or four vehicles, which matters more than you'd think for a group arriving in convoy.
Dining, and That Pizza Oven
Meals at Villa Victoria happen wherever the mood takes you, beside the sea, out on the verandah, in the pavilion, or around the dining table indoors. The resident chef cooks to order, drawing on cuisines from across the world, and the food is the single thing guests praise most consistently: Sri Lankan hoppers and sambol at breakfast, fresh fish and seafood curries, fresh grilled fish, and, repeatedly mentioned, a butter and chocolate cake that has developed something of a following.
One of the real pleasures here is how the food arrives. Local fishermen walk this stretch of beach selling the morning's catch, and guests have bought lobster, giant crab and snapper straight off the sand for the kitchen to cook that evening. It's the kind of thing that no hotel can arrange and no aggregator listing can promise.
The standout feature, though, is the cinnamon wood-fired pizza oven, an unexpected touch that turns a relaxed lunch or a family evening into something guests still talk about long after they've left.
The Pool, Garden and Beach
The pool sits at the centre of the garden under the palm trees, just in front of the villa and right beside the outdoor dining pavilion, with sun loungers around it. It's perfect for a dip straight after coming out of the ocean, or for stretching out with a drink and watching the sunset over the Thalpe shoreline. The gardens are meticulously kept, one guest noted "not a leaf out of place."
Down at the ocean's edge there's a hammock and a sturdy concrete gazebo positioned directly over the crashing waves, which becomes the place everyone drifts to for morning tea or an evening cocktail. Guests write about the daily walk to the rope swing on the sand and watching for turtles in the surf, several families have seen them from the bottom of the garden.
One honest note worth knowing: the beach immediately in front of the villa is fairly rocky, in the way much of Thalpe's coastline is. There's a long, good stretch of sand to walk, and the staff will happily point you to the nearby spots that are best for swimming, many guests simply use the pool and enjoy the ocean as the view and the soundtrack.
Service, Staff and Wellness
Villa Victoria comes with a resident team of six, led by a house manager whose name appears in review after review going back years, a rare kind of continuity, and the reason guests describe the place as feeling like family rather than a rental. They plan day trips, arrange drivers, accommodate late arrivals and handle celebrations without being asked twice.
Massages can be arranged at the villa through a local wellness centre, with therapists coming to you, treatments taken in the garden, with the sea breeze coming through at a fraction of what you'd pay at a resort spa. A security guard is on site, and daily housekeeping, welcome drinks and airport transfers are all part of the arrangement.
Where Villa Victoria Is
Villa Victoria sits on Matara Road in Thalpe, one of the most sought-after stretches of Sri Lanka's south coast, roughly 15 minutes from the ramparts of Galle Fort with its restaurants, galleries, boutiques and colonial streets. The bay at Unawatuna and the lake and stilt fishermen of Koggala are both close by, and a good cluster of the coast's best restaurants is only ten to fifteen minutes away when you want a change of scene.
Drive thirty minutes in the other direction and you reach Weligama and Mirissa for surfing, whale watching and snorkelling with turtles. Tea estates, turtle hatcheries and temples are all within day-trip range. But as more than one guest has put it: this is the kind of place where you park up for a holiday and don't go anywhere, because everything is brought to you.
Ideal For
Families, multi-generational groups, groups of friends, and small weddings, the team has hosted a wedding here and handled all the comings and goings beautifully. The single-level layout suits older guests and young children equally, and the villa has proved a natural gathering point for international groups converging from different countries.

We have had the most wonderful time in this beautiful villa and magical country. Our group is made up of people from all around the world, France, Morocco, Greece, Lebanon, Canada, so it has been truly special to find a place we could all call home for four days. The villa is designed so beautifully, and the garden is nothing short of paradise. Best of all was the staff. Incredible villa with great staff. Anil the house manager was so lovely and helpful and cooked the best meals we never ate out. Listening to the sound of the waves crashing on your doorstep all day and night was so special! Lots of open spaces and places to chill. My only negative was there was a lot of mould in rooms and bathrooms due to recent rainfall and humidity and we asked to have it cleaned which was immediately done.
I first visited Sri Lanka in July 2004 but only had time for Colombo. It was always a dream to explore and enjoy Galle, its famous beach life, and our stay at Victoria Villa in October 2023, only 19 years later, finally made this dream come true. I have to thank my dear friend Karan Gokani for recommending this place but the owners — Lena and Vinod Hirdaramani — need to take a bow for building such a beautiful home.
Stunning doesn’t begin to describe it. Designed by renown Australian designer Bruce Fell-Smith, Victoria Villa is the definition of serenity featuring old world charm, a beautiful pool and garden, surrounded by gorgeous palm trees and a view of the Indian Ocean that is a privilege to behold. Guests in this 5-bedroom villa are looked after by six amazing staff led by the incredible Anil Hunukumbura. They are all friendly, kind and helpful and their cooking skills, especially for Sri Lankan specialities like hoppers, sambol, curries and various seafood dishes, are top notch.
Adding to the charm are serendipitous events like a local fishermen walking on the beach selling their latest catches to anyone willing in adjacent villas. We were lucky to make friends with one of them - Dula - who delighted our children by showing them at least 6 fresh lobsters, two giant crabs and a huge snapper. After learning how to hold live lobsters, without getting shredded, we ended up buying 3.5 kgs of them and ate a scrumptious meal at night cooked by the one and only Anil and his wonderful team.
On Lena’s recommendation, we organized massages at the villa. Three for our children and three for us adults from Deergayu Wellness Center. Their masseuses - Deepthi, Varsana and Randika - gave each of us one-hour Relaxing Full Body massages and we were touched by how friendly, kind and humble they all were. I would gladly recommend them to anyone visiting but this really elevated our experience. Affordable too. Each massage cost LKR 8,000 or USD 24. So worth the money.
Victoria Villa gets at least 5-stars from us. We would happily stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone considering. Can’t think of a better way to enjoy beautiful Galle and this incredible country.

One level house, easy to navigate. Ample parking for 3 to 4 vehicles, a tranquil pond as you enter, a large outdoor seating area to lounge in, a massive indoor but airy dining room/hall, a dining porch and 5 bedrooms : 1 master king, 1 twin, 2 Queens, and one room connecting to stunning media room. All rooms have their own bathrooms and most have natural lighting in the day, often with curated mini courtyards or skylights.
Enough space for at least 10 to stay, maybe more.
All beds are 4 post high set wood, with nets in fully air conditioned rooms.
In the center of the garden is a beautiful pool under palm trees, with sun beds.
There's a hammock by the edge of the ocean and a stunning sturdy and comfortable concrete gazebo just next to it overlooking the crashing waves to enjoy a breeze and a cup of tea or simply hang out and have an evening cocktail.
Attention to detail is amazing. From cutlery, to cleanliness.
Note that while this is beach front, and there is a good stretch of beach to walk on, the immediate beach in Talpe is fairly rocky. You can ask the staff about where it's good to go swimming though.
What also makes the location fantastic is its proximity to Unawatuna and Galle Fort and about 30 mins drive in the opposite direction to Weligama/Mirissa for excellent surfing.
So just 10 to 15 mins drive away from some awesome restaurants if you want a change of scenery... But honestly you probably won't.
This is the kind of place where you just park for a holiday and don't go anywhere. Everything is brought to you.

Just a note to say thank you for such a wonderful weekend - we absolutely loved it all! Anil and his team could not have been kinder or more helpful, and also very accommodating with all with our wedding comings and goings. Every meal was delicious and the villa itself was stunning - all in all we were very sad to leave.
We stayed at Villa Victoria for the first time in March 2019 and cannot wait to return. In fact, we wish we don't have to leave!
