Description

Weligama has no shortage of villas. What it has a shortage of is villas that feel like somewhere you'd actually want to live for a week rather than simply sleep in. Sevena is that rarer thing — a place with a genuine character of its own. The architecture is self-designed, the ¾-acre grounds are left deliberately wild, and the result is a property where peacocks pick their way across the lawn, monkeys move through the trees above the pool terrace, and a mongoose occasionally appears from the undergrowth as if to check what you're having for breakfast. LCSL has personally inspected Sevena Villa and placed it within our SELECT tier — our curated shortlist of south coast properties that consistently deliver on every detail, not just the photos.

THE PROPERTY

The design sits somewhere between traditional Sri Lankan architecture and something a Brooklyn design studio might have dreamed up if given three acres of tropical land and no brief. Exposed brick walls rise to high vaulted ceilings in the main living room. The tone is warm and earthy — rough-cut stone, dark timber, handpicked furnishings that feel considered rather than assembled. French windows throughout the ground floor pull the garden inside, or let you step out onto the veranda without quite deciding which you'd rather be. This is not a villa that tries to look like a luxury property. It simply is one.

BEDROOMS

Six bedrooms sleep up to 14 guests. The master bedroom has a king bed and opens directly onto a private terrace with pool views — the kind of room where you don't draw the curtains because the view earns the morning. The next four bedrooms each have queen beds, comfortable and well-proportioned, with the same French windows and garden outlook that run through the rest of the property. The sixth bedroom is a dedicated bunk room — two sets of singles — which makes the configuration genuinely practical for families travelling with children. Four bathrooms serve the full property, each fitted with rainfall shower, bidet, and the toiletries you'd expect at this level.

INDOOR LIVING

The main sala has the kind of living room you don't want to leave in the evenings — plush sofas, books worth reading, a large TV for the nights when no one wants to move, and that vaulted ceiling giving the whole room a sense of scale that photos never quite capture. The dining room has an unhurried quality to it: ornately carved chairs around a table that seats the full group, French windows looking out over the pool and garden, and the smell of whatever the kitchen has going. The kitchen itself is fully equipped with a gas stove, coffee maker, and a microwave — and access to fresh herbs grown in the villa's own garden. That last detail matters more than it sounds.

THE YOGA SHALA

This is the feature most villas in Weligama can't offer and most guests don't expect to find here. Sevena has its own dedicated Yoga Shala — a private, sheltered space for practice with the sounds of the garden all around it. For groups who want a structured morning routine away from a public class, this changes the character of a stay considerably. Book a visiting instructor through LCSL, or simply use the space quietly at your own pace. There are few better ways to start a day on the south coast of Sri Lanka.

OUTSIDE & THE POOL

The turquoise pool sits at the centre of the garden, ringed by sun loungers and shaded by the villa's canopy of tropical trees. Extensive lawns stretch out around it — open enough for children to run in, wild enough at the edges to feel genuinely immersed in the landscape rather than sitting in a managed resort garden. The outdoor dining area and veranda connect the inside and outside effortlessly. Barbecue evenings here, with the garden lit and the wildlife settled for the night, are the kind of evenings groups plan to do once and end up doing every other night.

DINING

Sevena Villa is fully staffed, with a private in-house chef at the centre of the experience. The kitchen team works across Sri Lankan, Asian, and Western cuisine, adapts to dietary requirements without making an issue of it, and takes genuine pride in the food that comes out. Past guests have consistently rated the meals as better than anything they ate in restaurants during their trip — and given what Weligama's restaurant scene offers, that is not a low bar. Meals are served wherever the group prefers: the dining room, the veranda, the poolside, or spread across the garden on a good evening. Grocery costs for ingredients are payable separately.

LOCATION & NEARBY

Sevena sits in a quiet lane off the main coastal road — close enough to everything, removed enough from it that the villa itself feels genuinely private. Turtle Bay Beach is a three-minute drive. Midigama Beach, one of the south coast's most consistent surf breaks, is also three minutes. Weligama Bay — where the beginner-to-intermediate surf schools operate and the town's café strip runs along the sand — is ten minutes by tuk-tuk. Mirissa, for whale and dolphin watching between November and April, is 13 minutes. Galle Fort is around 50 minutes up the coast highway. For longer days out, Yala National Park for leopard and elephant is roughly 2.5 hours by road, and the Udawalawe elephant reserve is under two hours. LCSL can arrange drivers, surf lessons, whale watching, and excursions — speak to our team when you book.

This stay was definitely one of the most beautiful and comfortable stays we have had ..
We were a group of 7 and we're made to feel right at home by the staff in the property Kavindu and Gayan.. The chief Janaka prepared the tastiest meals that made it very easy for us to stay in and relax and Kavindu looked after us throughout!
This beautiful and spacious property is situated off the Main Street and is surrounded by lush green.. the staff will help arrange for a car/tuk tuk when required..
The beds are very comfortable, hot water on demand and a lovely swimming pool to relax in..
We also saw peacocks on the property.. Will definitely love to go back..
