Ranawara - An Ultra-Luxurious Beachfront Villa in Tangalle, Sri Lanka

The scale is what sets Ranawara apart from other luxury villas in Tangalle. Twenty-three acres of lawns and mature gardens stretch between the lagoon and the ocean, with south-facing beach frontage that gives you both sunrise and sunset over the water from the same stretch of sand, an unusual orientation on this coast, and one that changes the character of the whole day.

There are no neighbouring properties overlooking the grounds. The beach in front of the villa is effectively yours for the length of your stay: no loungers to claim, no vendors, nobody else. Paths wind through the gardens for early-morning walks, birdlife fills the trees, and the wetlands of the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary begin just beyond the estate boundary. Ranawara's seven ensuite suites are spread across the estate rather than stacked along a single corridor, which is what allows it to work equally well for a multi-generational family holiday and for a group of couples travelling together.

Five suites sit within the main house. Three are on the ground floor, alongside the double-height formal sitting room and the library. Two occupy the first floor, with views out over the lagoon and the ocean, together with a TV and cinema room and an open-sided sitting area positioned for 360-degree views across the gardens, the lagoon and the sea, the spot most guests end up returning to with a book and a drink.

A further two suites sit in as private garden cabanas a short walk from the main house, ideal for grandparents, or for a couple who would like a little separation from the group without leaving the estate.

Every suite has its own bathroom, and with seven bathrooms for fourteen guests nobody in your party is ever waiting.

The beach is the reason Ranawara exists. A long, soft, white-sand stretch runs the full length of the estate's frontage, and because nothing overlooks the grounds it functions as a private beach for the duration of your stay. You can walk for a long way in either direction and see almost nobody, this is one of the emptiest stretches of coast in southern Sri Lanka, a world away from the busier beaches further west.

Between the beach and the house, the gardens give you genuine room to disappear into: shaded lawns for lunch, quiet corners for an afternoon, and the constant sound of birds from the Kalametiya wetlands next door. Peacocks and waterbirds are regular visitors to the grounds, so you don't have to go anywhere to see wildlife, though the sanctuary proper is worth a boat trip.

The pool at Ranawara is genuinely unusual: 33 metres of infinity edge looking out over the gardens toward the Indian Ocean, making it one of the longest private villa pools anywhere in Sri Lanka. It's a pool you can actually swim lengths in rather than simply cool off, and at this scale a group of fourteen never feels crowded around it. Float at dusk, swim at dawn, or sit beside it with a drink as the light changes across the estate.

French windows open from the ground-floor sitting room straight onto the pool terrace, and the lawns beyond run down through the estate to the sand. There are plenty of spots around the villa for guests to relax, gather, or mark a special occasion, long tables can be set on the lawns, on the terrace, or beside the pool. A massage pavilion sits apart from the main house, where treatments can be arranged overlooking the gardens.

Meals at Ranawara are built around you rather than around a menu. The private chef cooks Sri Lankan and international dishes to your preferences, drawing on seafood landed by the fishing boats along this coast and produce from nearby markets, and will serve wherever suits, beside the pool, out on the lawns, on the terrace, or in the formal dining room.

Breakfast can drift as late as the group wants. Lunch can be a simple curry by the water. For groups celebrating something, a birthday, an anniversary, a family reunion, the team will set long tables outdoors for a private dinner under the stars. The practical effect is that nobody in your party ever has to think about what's for dinner, who's cooking, or how to get to a restaurant. On a week or a fortnight with family, that turns out to be the luxury people remember.

Ranawara comes fully staffed: a resident manager who runs the house, an assistant manager supporting day-to-day operations, a private chef, butlers and room attendants. Meals, excursions, transfers and daily requests are all handled in-house, the same standard of service you would expect from a boutique hotel, without ever sharing the property with another guest.
