Bougainvillea Retreat - A Lakefront Villa at Victoria Golf Resort, Digana
Villas in Kandy, Sri Lanka
Description
What guests tend to remember, though, isn't the golf. It's the view: the infinity pool sits looking straight out at the Knuckles Mountain Range, one of the most dramatic outlooks of any villa on the island. At 1,500 feet above sea level the air is cooler and cleaner than the coast, the gardens are thick with birdsong, and the whole place feels less like a rental than a much-loved family home you've been invited into. Guests routinely describe it as the highlight of their trip to Sri Lanka, and many of them arrive for one night and wish they'd booked three.

Set Inside Victoria Golf & Country Resort
The setting is what makes Bougainvillea Retreat different from every other luxury villa near Kandy. It sits within the grounds of Victoria Golf & Country Resort, a 517-acre estate laid out on a peninsula surrounded by the Victoria Reservoir, with the Knuckles Range rising behind it.
The 18-hole championship course was designed by the English golf architect Donald Steel, with Martin Ebert, and built largely by hand across former coconut plantation land. It ranks among Golf Digest's hundred most beautiful courses in the world and was named Best in Asia by Asian Golf magazine, and playing it, with the reservoir on one side and mountains in every direction, is genuinely one of the finest settings for golf anywhere. For a golf group, staying inside the gates means you can walk to the first tee rather than drive to it.
For everyone else, the resort setting delivers something just as valuable: quiet and security. This is a gated estate where nothing much happens beyond birds, golf carts and weather moving across the hills, a greener, calmer alternative to staying in Kandy town itself, while still being close enough to reach the city easily for a day out.
Seven Bedrooms, with Reservoir and Mountain Views
Four of the seven bedrooms are in the main house, three of them looking out over the Victoria Reservoir; the remaining three are set in private garden bungalows a short walk away. The split works well for larger groups, couples or grandparents can take the garden rooms for extra privacy, while families stay close together in the main house.
The rooms are furnished with traditional Sri Lankan pieces and local artwork rather than hotel furniture, which is part of why the villa reads as a home rather than a property. The front rooms open onto their own terraces with the same sweeping view of the hills that you get from the pool, the kind of room where you end up having morning tea outside rather than going downstairs for it. With seven bathrooms for sixteen guests, nobody in a large group is ever waiting.
The Infinity Pool, Spa and Gardens
The infinity pool is the heart of Bougainvillea Retreat, and the reason so many guests struggle to leave it. It looks straight out across the gardens toward the Knuckles Mountains, with the reservoir below, a view that changes hour by hour as cloud moves through the hills, and which is at its best in the late afternoon. Sun loungers and shaded terraces sit alongside it, and the gardens beyond are dense, mature and full of birds.
The villa also has an open-air spa where massages can be arranged, along with a jacuzzi and steam room, and the team can organise yoga sessions for guests who want them. It amounts to a genuine wellness offering rather than a token treatment room, several guests describe arriving tired from touring Sri Lanka and leaving properly rested, which for a hill-country stay is rather the point.
Dining and the Private Chef
Dining is, by a wide margin, the thing guests write about most. The resident chef meets you on arrival to talk through what your group likes and builds menus around it, Sri Lankan rice and curry, international dishes, whatever suits, prepared fresh each day. Guests have turned up with a jackfruit bought at a roadside stall and had it cooked into curry for that evening's dinner. Breakfast in particular draws praise, and meals are served on the terrace with the mountains and reservoir in front of you.
There's real flexibility built in: the kitchen works around safari departures, golf tee times and late arrivals rather than fixed service hours, and the team will pack lunches for days out. For a group of sixteen in the hill country, having all catering handled on site, with no drive to a restaurant and no one cooking, is what makes a week here feel genuinely restful.
Living Spaces, Games and the Library
Beyond the bedrooms and the pool, the villa is set up for the parts of a holiday that happen indoors. There's a cosy lounge with a library of books, board games, and a pool table, which matters more than it sounds in the hill country, where afternoon rain is common and a group needs somewhere to land. Guests who've been rained on for an entire stay still describe it as one of the best places they stayed in Sri Lanka, which tells you the interiors carry their weight.
The villa is also home to several very well-behaved dogs and cats, and a striking number of guests mention them as a highlight, part of what gives the place its family-home atmosphere.
Kandy, the Knuckles and the Hill Country
Digana is an excellent base for the central highlands. Kandy, home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most important sites, is about 40 minutes away, along with the botanical gardens at Peradeniya and the lake in the middle of the city.
Closer to hand, the Knuckles Mountain Range is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best trekking areas in Sri Lanka, with hiking available directly from the villa's doorstep as well as more serious guided treks further in. The Victoria Reservoir itself is part of the Mahaweli scheme, and the surrounding sanctuary is elephant country. From Digana the rest of the hill country opens up: tea estates and factory tours, the train through the mountains toward Ella, and cooler air than anywhere on the coast.
For travellers combining a beach holiday down south with a few days inland, the way most itineraries in Sri Lanka work, Bougainvillea Retreat makes a natural hill-country stop, and a considerably more comfortable one than a hotel in Kandy.
Ideal For
Golf groups, multi-generational family holidays, honeymooners, and travellers who want the hill country without giving up space or service. Couples in particular tend to fall for it, several describe it as the place on their trip where they felt most genuinely on honeymoon.

We spent three nights in this beautiful and peaceful hotel, nestled at the foot of the Knuckles Mountains. We had a cozy bungalow and were exceptionally well looked after by the staff. The entire property is very well-maintained and invites you to a relaxing stay.
The food, including breakfast, was wonderful and prepared according to Ayurvedic principles. It's simply a stylish hotel.

Whether you’re teeing off or unwinding in the lush gardens, this retreat is an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended!
A stunning location with incredible views, and a villa that’s beautifully kept and immaculate throughout.
The service was outstanding, and the food was exceptional.
Thank you for such a memorable stay. We felt warmly welcomed from the start. Pi is a fantastic host who made sure there was always something enjoyable for everyone. We loved all the friendly cats and dogs who added an extra coziness to the villa to feel even more like in your own vacation home. We can’t wait to come back!
The decor and setting of this hotel was outstanding. The staff go over and above are so friendly and professional, food is amazing. Pool, sun beds and outdoor area are beautiful. I would recommend everyone stay for 3 days as u will be disappointed to stay for less. Hotel is small exclusive and offers everything u need, pool table, games, library, jacuzzi and steam room. Definitely highly recommend
This place is incredible; our only regret was that we hadn't booked a longer stay. Beautiful place of serenity, wonderful food and staff that were just right. We will be back, for longer next time.
What an absolute gem! Situated in a beautiful natural setting. The staff are incredibly attentive—what more could you ask for? They proactively think along with you about how to make your holiday even better. The food is good, and the breakfast is particularly excellent. A perfect example for such hotels.
It's also nice that there are several well-behaved cats and dogs on site.
My husband and I absolutely enjoyed every minute we spent here. The atmosphere of the place was perfectly peaceful, the food was the best on our trip (thanks to the thoughtful and creative chef Shannon), the hospitality was so wonderful, and the room had a super comfortable bed! We were so sad to have not had more time here as it was the place where we felt most like being on our honeymoon. Would 10/10 recommend and hope to find a way to stay there again.
I fell in love with this hotel. It really doesn't feel like a hotel, more like a luxurious family home which you have been allowed into. The first thing that hits you is the absolutely incredible view of the Knuckles / hills from the infinity pool, just wow. The second thing is the homely ambience, you really feel welcomed and at home as soon as you arrive.
The rooms have traditional Sri Lankan made furniture and art and the front rooms have the same incredible views of the hills from their terraces.
We were looked after so well by Shannon who is an extremely talented chef, the food was absolutely exquisite and Shannon was always on hand for anything we needed, he even took us up to the viewpoint and brought tea and cakes for sunset!
Its hard to tear yourself away but the hotel is on the Victoria golf course and has amazing hiking right from its doorstep and is well located for Kandy. If you can't tear yourself away they will organise yoga and brilliant massages!
Such a beautiful tranquil villa! We really loved the magnificent views and pool, and the natural junggle setting. The food was wonderful. Thank you to the very hospitable Bouganvillea team :)
Our stay at the hotel was fantastic! The view was amazing and the service was top-notch.
This is a lovely hotel next to the golfclub. Especially the chef is worth mentioning. Very nice and his food is excellent.
I had an absolutely wonderful stay at Bougainvillea Retreat in Kandy! From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel incredibly welcome and everyone was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make sure my stay perfect. The setting is breathtaking, with stunning views of the mountains and lush gardens all around.
The infinity pool is a highlight, offering spectacular views and a peaceful place to unwind. I also enjoyed delicious food prepared by the talented chef-every meal was fresh and full of flavor. The retreat has so many thoughtful touches, from the open-air spa and relaxing massages to the cozy lounge with books and games. Whether you want to explore the area, play a round of golf, or just relax by the pool, this is the perfect place to do it.
I can’t recommend Bougainvillea Retreat enough for anyone looking for a peaceful, luxurious escape near Kandy. I left feeling completely refreshed and already can’t wait to return!
Such a unique and exceptional experience! As foodies, we were extremely impressed by the food and the personalized experience we received from Shannon! We even brought him a jackfruit that he cooked into a delicious curry 🤤 and packed the leftovers for our day out! The service, in general, was great - we arrived at 6:30 and we were welcomed by the manager and they quickly arranged our room even though we were supposed to arrive at 8:00. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for something different!
Stayed 1 night at this magical place and wish we had more time to enjoy this amazing property. We really wanted to fit in a round of golf before leaving Sri Lanka and were very lucky to have spent the night at Bougainvillea Retreat, who very kindly offered us a late checkout as we were flying out in the middle of the night, which meant we had time for 18 holes on our
last day, we loved absolutely everything, the food was spectacular.
Chef met us on arrival and discussed food preferences and so tailored the menu to our liking. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel, both served on the terrace with magnificent views of the mountains and reservoir. Our room was comfortable, well appointed, spacious and again with stunning views of the surroundings
Service was welcoming, warm, above and beyond, even with so little time, our laundry was washed, and ironed in 24 hours.
The property and grounds are well kept and probably the cleanest we have experienced on our trip! Our only regret is that we had so little time here. We hope to visit again. Thank you to the staff and of course every precious pet too for a thoroughly enjoyable stay
I actually don’t know where to start, we left today and I feel homesick. This place was just utterly divine and we were so lucky to spend a few nights here. Nothing in Sri Lanka can compare! As soon as you walk in you are welcomed and made to feel like home, it really was just the perfect oasis surrounded by beauty! It rained throughout our entire stay but that did not dampen our thoughts, I totally fell in love with this place and can’t wait to return. PLUS there are the most adorable animals, incredible food! Amazing service, beautiful rooms and exceptional hostes. They also catered to all our needs, I would have stayed much longer if I had known! Thank you so much to everyone and hope to see you soon xxx
What can I say, an experience of a life time. Pi and the team at Bougainvillea Retreat made the stay unforgettable. If you are looking at exploring the beautiful country of Sri Lanka, make sure you stay here.
You can relax 100% and then jump into the pool at regular intervals. Very friendly and accommodating staff who discreetly ensured that the stay was a success. And there is a golf course almost in the backyard.
